Alpha-dystroglycan

A cell-surface protein that needs proper glycosylation to help muscle and other tissues stay structurally stable.

Meaning in FKRP

Alpha-dystroglycan is part of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex. FKRP helps add glycan structures that allow alpha-dystroglycan to bind normally to extracellular matrix proteins such as laminin. When that glycosylation is impaired, muscle fibers become more vulnerable to damage.
